Queen Latifah was born Dana Elaine Owens in Newark, New Jersey, on March 18, 1970. The second daughter of Lance and Rita Owens, Latifah is best known for her social politics, acting skills and gift for rhyme. When she was 8 years young her Muslim friend gave her the nickname Latifah, meaning "delicate and sensitive" in Arabic. Latifah began singing with the choir of Shiloh Baptist Church in Bloomfield, New Jersey, and performed for the first time in public when she sang a rendition of "Home" as one of the two Dorothys in a stage production of The Wizard of Oz at St. Anne's parochial school. Latifah was motivated by her mother who was in constant contact with the choir and the students. She invited Mark James, a local disc jockey known as D.J. Mark the 45 King to invite her to join the school dance.
